After a really, really rough start to the winter, things have calmed down a bit and are going much smoother. A big part of it is in thanks to the slightly warmer temperatures. We’ve had temps a couple degrees above freezing and snow has actually melted a bit from our roof. Talk about a welcome site! When it’s warmer, even slightly, it does make things much easier. It also gives us a chance to get back on track and focus on important things, like staying healthy through the winter.

We live about 45 minutes from any doctor or hospital, and we are 25 minutes away from the nearest town if we need any medical supplies. Even then our options are limited.  During this time of year it can be increasingly difficult to avoid the nasty germs making their way around, and while we can’t avoid illness altogether, we have done pretty well at staving off major sicknesses and infections for well over a year.

 

One of the must haves in our house is colloidal silver. This is our go-to anytime we’ve been exposed to illness or if we feel something coming on. Last week we were at the grocery store during the last minute Christmas rush, and all we could hear throughout the store as we shopped was coughing. It was horrible! The first thing I said to my children was ‘when we get home we are using the silver!’ As soon as we walked in the door we did a few spritzes in our mouths and we were good to go. I also followed that up with an elderberry kombucha. Elderberry is a fantastic thing to consume during cold and flu season, and it can help immensely to fight off nasty bugs. Combined with kombucha, that’s a powerhouse drink right there! If you aren’t familiar with the benefits of either, I highly recommend reading up on them and consider keeping them on hand as well.

Not only is colloidal silver good for fighting germs, it has also come in handy for eye issues in our house. My daughter has had several styes, and each time we grab the silver and put it in her eye. The next day she is completely back to normal. My son had a nasty scratch on his eye while playing with our cat. Yeah, I know. Talk about scary!! His eye was so red and sore and sensitive. He was miserable. I didn’t know if it would work, but I gave silver a try and the next day he was about 50% better, with total healing happening the day after that. That stuff is seriously a miracle worker.

Something else we use regularly to keep our immune system happy and healthy are essential oils. Most people know about the amazing benefits of such oils now, so there’s no real need to get into details here. That would take an entire post on it’s own! We have seen wonderful benefits from the use of certain oils and I totally contribute our health and well-being to them. We use them to purify the air, clean the house, rid headaches, help with aches and pains, calm nerves and relieve anxiety, contribute to restful sleeps, and just keeping our spirits up. Being in good spirits is also a great way to stay healthy.

Keeping yourself in an overall healthy condition will enable your immune system to fight off viruses with ease, and hopefully without medication. Taking a good quality multivitamin and probiotic daily is very important. I also take cod liver oil, liquid magnesium, liquid iron, vitamin d3 (especially important during the darker months), and iodine to support my thyroid. For years I have struggled with thyroid issues and have found that incorporating these things makes a world of difference.

 

Lastly, a good diet is really crucial. Taking care of your gut will ensure you are taking good care of your immune system. We try to incorporate a lot of fermented foods in our meals here, and bone broths which are really great for your immune system. Ginger, garlic, honey, and lemon also provide excellent benefits to keeping you in great health. The best way we’ve found for eating those last 4 things on cold winter days and nights is in what I like to call my Vitamix Carrot Ginger Immune Booster Soup. I *love* the Vitamix and use it often in our fifth wheel. It’s such a fast and easy way to whip together amazing hot soup. I definitely recommend getting one.

Vitamix Carrot Ginger Immune Booster Soup
Serves 4
A super healthy, immune boosting, powerhouse soup to keep you healthy and warm this winter season.

Ingredients
  1. 4 to 6 organic carrots, chopped
  2. 1 clove of garlic
  3. 1-inch piece of fresh ginger, peeled
  4. 2 tablespoons avocado oil or extra-virgin olive oil
  5. 1 (14-ounce) can of coconut milk
  6. 1 tablespoon Manuka honey
  7. 2 drops of Young Living Lemon essential oil (or juice of 1 lemon)
  8. 1/2 cup of water
  9. salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
  1. Combine all ingredients in the Vitamix
  2. Blend on high for about 10 minutes, or until steaming
Notes
  1. Top with raw pumpkin seeds for a nice garnish and to add another immune booster!
  2. Serve with a Sourdough Rye Wasa cracker
